The Applied Thai Traditional Medicine Program, School of Medicine, Walailak University, continues to enhance the professional capacity of its students by organizing an intensive workshop titled “Enhancing Practical Skills in the Care of Intermediate Care Stroke Patients through Thai Traditional Medicine.” The program aims to develop high-competency graduates who meet the needs of Thailand’s healthcare system.

The workshop was held on 21–22 February 2026 at the Physical Therapy Practice Room 1, Building B8, Walailak University. The opening ceremony was presided over by Associate Professor Dr. Chuchart Phantasawat, Dean of the School of Medicine, with Assistant Professor Tassanee Ongthanasap serving as this project leader.

Strengthening Practical Competence Beyond the Classroom

This project was designed for second- and third-year students in the Applied Thai Traditional Medicine program, providing hands-on training beyond textbook knowledge. The workshop emphasized the integration of Royal Thai Traditional Massage techniques with multidisciplinary rehabilitation approaches to improve the quality of life of patients recovering from stroke during the intermediate phase—considered the “Golden Period” of physical rehabilitation.

Over the two-day intensive training, students received both theoretical and practical instruction from a team of expert practitioners from Phunphin Hospital. The lead speaker, Ajarn Thapanee Srilam, Applied Thai Traditional Medicine Practitioner (Professional Level), delivered key lectures, supported by a practical training team: Mr. Paramet Lompat, Ms. Aisawan Polchai, and Mr. Pongsakorn Sawangphon, Thai Traditional Medicine practitioners from the Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine Clinic, Phunphin Hospital, Surat Thani Province.

Key Highlights of the Workshop

  • Multidisciplinary Integration: Approaches to caring for intermediate stroke patients in collaboration with healthcare professionals in public health facilities.
  • Hands-on Rehabilitation Techniques: Royal Thai Traditional Massage for patients experiencing dysphagia (swallowing difficulties), facial paralysis, and speech impairment.
  • Herbal Medicine Applications: Appropriate selection of herbal remedies to stimulate recovery and manage complications such as constipation in hemiplegic and paraplegic patients.
  • Systematic Assessment and Documentation: Training in history taking, physical examination, and structured patient data collection in accordance with healthcare and research standards.

Beyond providing specialized clinical knowledge, this initiative aligns with the School of Medicine’s academic strategic plan to enhance educational quality indicators. Graduates from the program will be well-prepared for professional practice, equipped with competencies that match national healthcare demands. Ultimately, the project contributes to reducing the public health burden and supporting stroke patients in regaining independence and quality of life. The overall feedback from participants was rated at a very high level of satisfaction.

We extends sincere appreciation to the expert speakers and Phun-pin Hospital for their valuable knowledge-sharing and support, as well as to all faculty members and staff who facilitated the successful implementation of this program.
