Dr. Pirada Yincharoen, a faculty member at the School of Medicine, Walailak University, participated in the eight-week Global Health Scholar – Surgery: Breast and Reconstructive program at Nuvance Health, Connecticut, USA, from October 20 to December 20, 2025.
The program provided exposure to the full continuum of breast cancer care, encompassing preoperative assessment and treatment planning, breast cancer surgery, breast reconstruction, postoperative management, and follow-up care. It also included multidisciplinary collaboration, tumor board discussions, and educational activities. In addition, the experience offered insights into the U.S. healthcare system, particularly healthcare delivery, coordination across clinical services, and continuity of patient care.
During this period, Dr. Yincharoen also completed a Clinical Observation Program in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), New York, from December 1–5, 2025. The observership focused on plastic and reconstructive surgery through operating-room observations, clinical rounds, and academic activities, with particular emphasis on surgical approaches and techniques in breast reconstruction following cancer treatment.
Together, these programs provided opportunities to explore clinical practices and healthcare delivery in a different setting. The insights gained can be adapted to the Thai healthcare context to strengthen breast cancer care pathways, multidisciplinary collaboration, and surgical approaches to breast cancer treatment and reconstruction, with an emphasis on quality of care, patient safety, and quality of life.
Beyond clinical practice, these experiences can also contribute to medical education, professional development, and clinically relevant research, while fostering international academic connections and opportunities for future collaboration. These efforts aim to support the continued advancement of clinical services, education, and research at the School of Medicine and Walailak University Hospital.
